G1 - the First Generation
The 601 is the first generation of the PowerPC processor. It is a good processor, and has been used in a variety of machines. It was designed as a transition chip from IBM's full Power Architecture to the PowerPC -- this allowed IBM to transition many of their workstation and server machines to these single chip processors (though it was not binary compatible). This meant that there were a few legacy instructions left in (baggage), so it was not quite as efficient as it could be (probably less that 5% die space wasted). But still, this small amount of legacy "inefficiency" encouraged quick evolution to the Second Generation chips (the 603's and 604's).
